On average, women globally spend over twice as many hours as men on unpaid labor. Over their lifetimes, this amounts to seven more years of unpaid work compared to men. If you were to pay workers at market rates for the unpaid work that women perform, it would constitute one of the largest sectors in the global economy. Unpaid care work also constitutes a significant barrier to women’s participation in labor markets, which impacts pay equity.
